Day eighteen! Today's prompt was to take a poem from a book, and cover all but the last line. The first line of your new poem is a response to the last line of the poem in the book. Uncovering one line at a time, you write one line at a time of your new poem, responding to the original poem. I used Marilyn Hacker's poem "She Bitches About Boys." This was what I ended up with:
The state of girls
Generous girls don’t owe anything
to those high strung boys,
despite the dreams they might have.
Why should they impoverish themselves,
breaking eggs in the carton?
And who will reassemble them?
They, like we, are too full
of rooster men strutting and scratching,
no matter how much they love animals.
Beauty will not save girls,
nor will being lovable,
their charms a crowning insufficiency.
